Vaidya, born on 12th August 1936, is one of India’s top stage actresses. She is best known for her solo performance of ‘Ramayana’.
Specifically, Ramayana is her husband Gopal Shaman’s modern theatrical interpretation of the Sanskrit epic.

The show, subtitled Epic as English Drama, was the only Indian production to be performed on Broadway.
Vaidya began her acting career in 1968 with Full Circle, a collection of dramatizations of poetry and stories.
The production became an instant sensation when it toured Europe for the first time. She is also the co-founder of Aksara Theater, a non-profit arts organization in New Delhi, India.
The institute was founded by Jabala, her husband Gopal Shaman, and daughter Anasuya Vaidya, who is also a theater director.

Legendary Theater Actor: Death and Obituary of Jalabala Vaidya
Jarabala Vaidya, legendary theater actor and co-founder of the capital’s iconic Aksara Theater, died in New Delhi on April 9, 2023.
She has received several awards including the Sanjit Natak Academic Tagore Award, the Drinadia Sanger Award and the Andhra Nathia Academic Honorary Award.
Additionally, the theater actress was honored as an Honorary Citizen of the City of Baltimore, USA.

In February this year, the Delhi government also awarded her the Valisht Saman Medal for her lifelong contribution to the performing arts.
Vidya was married twice. She was previously briefly married to prominent journalist and columnist CP Ramachandran.
But soon after, she met and married her lifelong partner in art and life, the poet and playwright Gopal Shaman.

Jalabala Vidya dies of respiratory illness
According to her daughter, theater director Anasuya Vidya Shetty, Jarabala Vidya was battling a respiratory illness until her death at the age of 86.
Vaidya was born in London to Indian writer and freedom fighter Suresh Vaidya and British classical singer Madge Frankeith.

She started her journalism career, writing for several national newspapers and magazines in Delhi.
Vaidya is survived by a husband, daughter and three grandchildren, including singer and actress Neesa Shetty, actor Drew Shetty and author Yashna Shetty.

Jalabala Vaidya: Career and Accomplishments
The Ramayana, played by Jaravara Vaidya, has been acclaimed in major Indian and international newspapers.
She has performed in over 35 cities and towns in India, Broadway, London’s West End, United Nations Headquarters and national arts centers around the world.
She co-founded the Aksara National Classical Theater in New Delhi with Sherman.
Sherman designed and built the theater, a stunning arts complex and a much-loved center for dramatic performances.

Vaidya has acted in more than 20 plays including Full Circle, Gitanjali, Ramayana, Let’s Laugh Again, Bhagavad Gita and Kabriwala.
Vaidya is not only an actress but also a director, having directed several plays at the Aksara Theater, as well as a highly successful dramatized book series.
Recently, he performed another version of Ramayana, and continued to be in charge of the opening and closing performances.
The production is supported by a group of young actors from the Aksara Repertoire, all trained by Vaidya.
