On March 13, 2020, plainclothes Police officers raided Breonna Taylor’s apartment early in the morning. The officers were executing a no-knock warrant, which allowed them to enter the premises without announcing their presence.

Taylor, asleep with her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, woke up to banging on the door. Believing it was a home invasion, Walker, a licensed gun owner, fired a warning shot, hitting one of the officers in the leg.

In response, the officers fired multiple shots, killing Taylor and injuring Walker. However, the officers did not find any drugs or evidence of illegal activity in the apartment, which was the target of the warrant.

U.S. Police Charges And Arrest Details

In September 2020, a grand jury charged one of the officers involved, Brett Hankison, with three counts of wanton endangerment for using his weapon recklessly and endangering the neighbors in the adjacent apartments.

However, none of the officers were charged directly with Taylor’s death.

The decision not to charge the officers directly regarding Taylor’s death led to further protests and called for justice. Many critics of the decision argued that it reflected the systemic racism and bias in the U.S. justice system.

City Leaders Promise Reforms

In the wake of Taylor’s death, Louisville city leaders promised reforms and changes to the Police department’s policies and practices.

In December 2020, the city council unanimously passed “Breonna’s Law,” which banned the use of no-knock warrants.

The law also required officers to wear body cameras during any search or arrest and mandated that officers undergo drug and alcohol testing after any use of force incidents. The law was named after Breonna Taylor and aimed to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

However, many activists and civil rights groups argue that more reforms are needed to address the systemic issues of racism and bias in the U.S. justice system.
